What is the origin of the pillar for the accursed devil at the Jamarat, and is it permissible to increase its size or lengthen it to cope with the rising number of pilgrims?

The prescribed act in Hajj is the throwing of the pebbles (ramy al-jimār), in emulation of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him. The place where the pebbles are thrown reminds us of the situation of Abraham, peace be upon him, as he stoned Satan, though it is not Satan now. The expression "stoning Satan or Iblis" has not been mentioned in the Quran or Sunnah (definition); rather, what is mentioned is the throwing at Jamrat al-Aqaba, the Small Jamra, and the Middle Jamra. As for increasing the size of the pillar or modifying it, this matter is referred to the authority responsible for Hajj and its sacred sites in the Kingdom.
