What is the Shariah ruling on the following: staying at home without a niqab in front of non-mahram men, or completing studies without a niqab, or completing studies with a niqab secretly while rarely returning home? And is a hunger strike to pressure parents for the niqab permissible or forbidden? And is one who dies because of it considered a suicide?

Filial piety is an obligatory obedience, but obedience to Allah is more rightful and takes precedence. Wearing the hijab (definition) is a religious obligation, as stipulated by the texts of the Quran and Sunnah (definition). It is not permissible to obey parents in an act of disobedience to Allah, such as removing the hijab in front of cousins or others. However, if you are compelled to stay at home or study at university, and there is no means to do so except by complying with your parents' demand to temporarily remove the hijab, then there is no harm in that until the necessity ceases.
