The answer

Aisha's statement, "When the Muslims were afflicted," refers to the harm inflicted by the polytheists upon the Muslims and their siege in Shi'b Abi Talib. This prompted the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, to grant permission for emigration to Abyssinia. The siege lasted for about three years, starting from the seventh year of the prophethood. This is evidenced by Abu Bakr's seeking permission from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, to emigrate after the harm he suffered from Quraysh.
