The verse was revealed concerning the Christians of Najran when they asked the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, if he wanted them to worship him. So, Allah revealed the verse, clarifying that it is impossible for a prophet to command the worship of anyone other than Allah. As for His saying, the Almighty: {after you have surrendered (to Allah) as Muslims}, it refers to the readiness of the Christians to embrace Islam, and the People of the Book are not described in the Qur'an as truly being Muslims. There is another weak narration regarding the reason for its revelation, which states that a man asked the Prophet if he should prostrate to him. The Prophet responded that prostration is only due to Allah, whereupon the verse was revealed.
