Is the following Hadith authentic: "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was asked: 'Can a Muslim steal?' He replied: 'Yes, a Muslim can steal.' Then they asked him: 'Can a Muslim commit adultery?' He replied: 'Yes, a Muslim can commit adultery.' Then they asked him: 'Can a Muslim lie?' He replied: 'No, a Muslim does not lie; a Muslim does not lie.'"?

A hadith (definition) with this exact wording has not been found. Al-Albani cited a similar wording and judged it to be fabricated (Mawdu'). In another narration from Al-Khara'iti, it is reported that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was asked: "Does a believer commit adultery?" He said: "That may happen." He was asked: "Does a believer steal?" He said: "That may happen." He was asked: "Does a believer lie?" He said: "No," then he recited: "Indeed, those who fabricate falsehood are those who do not believe." It is established in the hadiths that lying is prohibited, such as the hadith: "Indeed, lying leads to wickedness," and the hadith: "The signs of a hypocrite are three: when he speaks, he lies." Malik narrated a mursal hadith that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was asked: "Can a believer be a coward?" He said: "Yes." "Can he be stingy?" He said: "Yes." "Can he be a liar?" He said: "No."
