The answer

It is recommended to perform ablution for the deceased before washing them, by agreement of the four Madhhabs, but it is not obligatory. This is indicated by the of Umm Atiyah (may Allah be pleased with her) regarding the washing of the Prophet's daughter (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): "Begin with her right side and the places of ablution on her." Also, Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen's statement that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not say concerning the man whose camel trampled him, "Perform ablution for him."
