To what extent are the hadiths valid that specify the name of the Awaited Mahdi as “Muhammad ibn Abdullah” or “Muhammad”? And can his name be “Aba al-Qasim” or “Taha” or “Mustafa” or other names of the Prophet? And to what extent is the hadith “His name is like my name and his father’s name is like my father’s name” valid?

One must believe in the Mahdi and his advent at the end of time. His name will be in accordance with the name of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and his father's name. The Mahdi will appear with the Prophet's explicit name, not by his patronymic such as Abu al-Qasim, nor by his titles mentioned in the noble hadith (definition), such as: "I am Muhammad, and I am Ahmad, and I am al-Mahi (the obliterator) by whom disbelief is obliterated, and I am al-Hashir (the gatherer) after whom the people will be gathered, and I am al-'Aqib (the successor), and al-'Aqib is he after whom there is no prophet."
