Was the punishment for those who lagged behind the Battle of Tabuk public shaming?

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, disciplined the three noble Companions by boycotting them and having people shun them, as mentioned in the hadith (definition) of Ka'b ibn Malik. This might involve shaming them, as scholars have stated the permissibility of disciplining a person who openly commits a sin and chastising them by shaming if their sin is public and the ruler deems it beneficial. Shaming should be confined to what was openly proclaimed, not what was concealed.
