What is the explanation of the Hadith: "A woman is married for four things: for her wealth, for her lineage, for her beauty, and for her religion. So choose the one who is religious, may your hands be soiled (with dust)," and what is the meaning of "may your hands be soiled (with dust)"?
The was narrated by Al-Bukhari, Muslim, and the compilers of the Sunan. Its meaning is that people habitually choose a woman for her beauty, wealth, lineage, and religiosity. However, it is befitting for people of faith that religion be the basis of their choice, especially in matters with lasting effects. Therefore, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, urged marrying the religious woman. If religiosity and beauty combine, that is good; otherwise, religiosity takes precedence. The phrase "May your hands be soiled with dust" originally means a supplication for poverty, but here it is used for admonishment, to emphasize the gravity of the matter, and as an encouragement.
