The answer

A person's state is either that of a known male, a known female, or an intersex individual (mushkil). The intersex individual is one who has both male and female organs, or neither of them but has an opening from which urine exits. Before puberty, an intersex individual is identified by urination: if he urinates from the male organ, he is a boy; if she urinates from the female organ, she is a girl; if he urinates from both, the judgment is based on which came first, or which is more, and if they are equal, then he is intersex. After puberty, a male is distinguished by the growth of a beard, ejaculation from the male organ, or the manifestation of courage. A female is distinguished by the appearance of breasts, the emission of milk from them, and menstruation.
