Scholars differed regarding the maximum duration of (postpartum bleeding). The majority opinion is that it is forty days. After this, the woman performs (ritual purification bath) and all rulings pertaining to ritually pure women apply to her. Any blood she sees after the forty days is considered istihada (non-menstrual vaginal bleeding), unless it coincides with her regular menstrual period, in which case it is considered menses. Some scholars, however, held the view that the maximum duration of nifas is sixty days. According to this opinion, all blood the woman sees is considered nifas as long as it does not exceed sixty days.
