What is the ruling on installing a contraceptive device if it causes a prolonged menstrual period and severe pain, and must it be removed or should one wait?
Source: FtawySummary from Ftawy's records · added here Sep 2, 2026
An IUD (intrauterine device) does not need to be removed after its insertion. The concerns that led to its prohibition have already occurred. There is no harm in keeping it in place afterward to delay pregnancy unless it causes harm, in which case it must be removed to prevent that harm. Its removal is further emphasized if another safe method of contraception is available during the breastfeeding period.
