The question

What is the ruling on a woman inserting her finger into her vagina to clean secretions after urinating and menstrual blood during her period, without lust? Is this permissible? If it is forbidden, is it considered a form of masturbation (nikah al-yad), and what is its expiation?

The answer

It is not permissible for a woman to insert a finger into the vagina, except for what has been exceptionally permitted with evidence, such as inserting a piece of musk or perfume into the vulva after to remove the odor of menstruation, or inserting a cloth to ascertain purity from menstruation or postpartum bleeding. As for inserting a finger to clean the vulva from urine or the like, it is not permissible. Some scholars consider this a form of lesbianism (musaḥaqa). It is sufficient for her to wash what becomes visible when sitting to relieve herself. There is no expiation for this act except sincere repentance.
