The question

What are the implications for an accountant who discovered a accounting error after a financial settlement had been approved, which led to a payment being made to a supplier, and then it became clear that the amount had already been paid, knowing that he had left his job and only recently remembered the matter and felt guilty? Are there specific supplications to atone for this sin?

The answer

An accountant is entrusted with the company's funds, and their duty is to be precise and report any error they discover. They must inform the manager of any error that resulted in taking people's money unjustly. Silence after becoming aware of the error incurs sin. Some scholars are of the opinion that whoever refrains from recovering squandered money is liable for it. Before becoming aware of the error, there is no sin, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "My Ummah has been forgiven for mistakes, forgetfulness, and what they are coerced into." A sin that entails a right of a human being is not sufficiently expiated by repentance and seeking forgiveness; rather, rights must be returned to their rightful owners.
