If you have wealth and a year has passed on it, and you owe a debt equal to it, then is not obligatory upon you, according to the majority of scholars who hold that debt is deducted from zakat. However, according to Ash-Shafi'i in his new opinion, and Ibn Baz, and Ibn 'Uthaymeen, debt is not deducted from zakat, and thus zakat becomes obligatory upon you. And the of Malik is that if you have an asset that can be used to offset the debt, then zakat is obligatory; otherwise, it is not. The most cautious opinion is that debt is not deducted from zakat.
