How much is the Zakat on dates that a person harvests and sells in the market?

Scholars are in agreement regarding the obligation of Zakat (definition) on dates if they reach five wasq; the proof for this is the hadith (definition): "There is no sadaqah (definition) (Zakat) on grain or dates until they reach five awsuq (wasqs)."

The amount of Zakat varies according to the method of irrigation: - If the dates are irrigated by rainwater, springs, or if they are close to water such that they drink with their roots (i.e., without cost): then one-tenth (the 'ushr) is due. - If they are irrigated with cost and effort, such as using machinery to raise water: then half of one-tenth is due.

The proof for this is the hadith: "For that which is irrigated by the sky (rain) and springs, or that which is watered naturally, one-tenth is due; and for that which is irrigated by artificial means (nadh), half of one-tenth is due."

If the irrigation is equally divided between the two methods, then three-quarters of one-tenth is due. If one method predominates, the more frequent method is considered. If the amount is unknown, one-tenth is obligatory.
