Is it better to give a voluntary charity sum to my indebted mother who has a salary, or to the poor, knowing that the sum does not cover my mother's debt?

The virtue of honoring one's mother is immense, and she is the most deserving of good companionship, as in the hadith (definition): "Your mother, then your mother, then your mother." Charity given to a relative is superior, as he said: "Charity given to a poor person is one reward, while charity given to a relative is two: charity and maintaining kinship ties." The mother is the most deserving among relatives of charity. Therefore, it is advisable to help the mother pay off her debt from this money to alleviate her distress, and then if more money becomes available, to pay off the remainder of her debt. If her debt is paid off and she is self-sufficient, the charity should be directed to the poor and needy. Paying off the mother's debt from zakat (definition) is permissible if she is unable to pay it herself, because it is not obligatory for the child.
