The answer

A foundling of unknown parentage is considered like an orphan because he has lost both parents. Sponsoring him is a communal obligation (fard kifaaya), and the one who undertakes it receives the reward of sponsoring an orphan. The reward varies according to the excellence of the sponsorship.
