What is the ruling on using free internet, sometimes available without a password or with one, and is it better to intend it as a gift or as charity?

It is impermissible to connect to the Internet via Wi-Fi except with the permission of the line owner, whether an individual or a company. Permission can be verbal or customary, such as the line owner leaving the network open without a password, or if it is provided by governmental bodies for public use. Benefiting from this service without permission is not considered an act of charity (sadaqah (definition)) or a gift. Charity (sadaqah) is superior to a gift, as it is intended purely for the sake of Allah the Almighty.
