is not obligatory on gold unless it reaches the (approximately 85 grams of pure gold). The time for its zakat is the same as the time for the original money used to purchase the gold.

As for how to pay zakat: one-quarter of one-tenth (2.5%) of the gold itself is to be given, or one-quarter of one-tenth of its value at the time zakat becomes due, provided it has not fallen below the nisab during the hawl (one lunar year).
