Is Zakat due on all the gold that has not had Zakat paid on it for four years, or is it only due on the portion of it upon which a [lunar] year has passed and which has not been used?
If jewelry is intended for personal use, the majority of scholars hold that it is not subject to . However, zakat becomes obligatory if it is intended for saving, renting out, trade, or for both personal use and saving. Zakat is due for past years on jewelry for which zakat is obligatory, regardless of whether it was used or not. As for permissible jewelry intended for personal use, the majority of scholars hold that it is not subject to zakat. A condition for the exemption of jewelry from zakat is that it must be permissible and intended for personal use or lending, whether it has been used or not. It is obligatory to hasten in paying the due zakat and to repent for delaying it, as paying zakat is an immediate obligation.
