The question

Is Zakat obligatory for someone who owns gold that is less than the nisab (minimum threshold) for gold, but its value exceeds the value of the nisab for silver, and a hawl (full lunar year) has passed on it, taking into consideration that the nisab for Zakat adopted by him is the nisab for silver?

The answer

According to the majority of jurists, what is considered for the (minimum taxable amount) of gold is the weight, not the value. Thus, is not obligatory on it unless one possesses 20 mithqals (85 grams). Whoever possesses less than that owes no zakat, even if the value of the gold equals the nisab of silver. The proof for this is: "There is no sadaqa (zakat) on less than twenty mithqals of gold." This differs from paper currency, for which most contemporary scholars are of the view that its nisab is determined by silver because it is more beneficial for the poor. Therefore, zakat is not obligatory on this gold as long as it has not reached its prescribed nisab, and its reaching the nisab of silver is not taken into consideration.
