Jewelry acquired for adornment is not subject to according to the majority of scholars. It does not matter if it is a means of preserving wealth or if its value increases, as long as it is not intended for trade. If its owner intends it for trade after it was for adornment, Zakat becomes due on it from the moment of that intention. As for jewelry acquired for savings or trade, the correct opinion is that Zakat is obligatory on it. Some scholars have gone further, holding that Zakat is obligatory on all jewelry without exception, even if it is prepared for use, and this is the more cautious approach.
