Does the deceased feel those around him, hear their conversations, and recognize them immediately after his death and burial? And does he move and sit up on his own? And is the increase in his weight after death an indication of his abundant sins?

Matters related to the deceased and their state in the grave are unseen (ghayb) and should not be delved into except with clear evidence. Scholars have differed regarding whether the deceased can hear the words of the living. Some affirm this, citing the hadith (definition): "Indeed, he hears the sound of their sandals as they depart," and the hadith about the Prophet's address to the slain at Badr: "By the One in Whose hand is my soul, you are not more able to hear what I say than they are," as well as the command to give salutations to the inhabitants of graves. Imam Ibn Taymiyyah held that the deceased can hear in a general sense, and this hearing is a perception, not a hearing of acceptance and compliance.

In contrast, Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, denied that the dead can hear, citing (Indeed, you cannot make the dead hear) and (Nor can you make those in the graves hear). Some scholars agreed with her, stating that the hearing of the people of the well was a miracle or a specific privilege for the Prophet, and that the hadith "he hears the sound of their sandals" is specific to the initial placement in the grave.

The truth is that the deceased can hear the words of the living in a general sense, and may hear in one state but not another. As for the movement of the deceased and their sitting up for their reckoning, this is affirmed in the hadith of Al-Bara', in which it is narrated: "His soul is returned to his body, and two angels come to him and make him sit up." As for the deceased becoming heavier after death, there is no evidence for this from the Qur'an or Sunnah (definition).
