Does the deceased hear the voices of those accompanying the funeral procession? And what is the authenticity of the hadith: "He hears the shuffling of the sandals of those accompanying [the funeral procession]"? And what is the ruling on instructing the deceased in the grave? And does the deceased hear this instruction? And is what some people do, such as addressing the deceased in their grave and saying: "By Allah, he hears me now just as you hear me," correct?

The deceased hears the living at times, as stated in the Prophetic Sunnah. As Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah said, the hearing of the living by the deceased is a hearing of perception and not always continuous. As for the talqīn (instruction) of the deceased after burial, it was not a well-known practice among Muslims during the time of the Prophet, peace be upon him, and his Caliphs, but it was reported from some Companions. The madhhabs (schools of thought) differed regarding its ruling, between recommendation, dislike, and permissibility. Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah chose permissibility as the most balanced opinion.
