Is the story mentioned authentic, and is it permissible to cite it to strengthen faith in divine decree (Qadar)?

The origin of this story is unknown, and it has not been found in the books of the scholars. There appears to be no prohibition against mentioning it in admonition and remembrance if its content is not legally forbidden and it is not known to be a lie. Ibn Taymiyyah holds that it is permissible to narrate hadiths that are not known to be fabricated for encouragement and deterrence, even if no legal ruling is established by them. He states that what is known to be good or evil by the proofs of the Sharia (definition) is beneficial and not harmful, but what is known to be false should not be given any attention.
