The answer

Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen holds that one who abandons prayer does not disbelieve unless he abandons it completely. However, one who prays sometimes and abandons it at other times, meaning he prays occasionally and leaves it at other times, does not thereby disbelieve.

He based his view on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) sayings: "The covenant between us and them is prayer, so whoever abandons it has disbelieved," and "Between a man and polytheism and disbelief is the abandonment of prayer."

The Shaykh expressed doubt about the faith of one who only prays in , but he did not rule him a disbeliever; rather, he withheld judgment concerning his matter.

Thus, according to him, one who abandons prayer for four days or a week does not disbelieve, but he commits a grave sin.
