What is the ruling on one who is forced to prostrate to an idol under threat of death or the mutilation of a part of the body?

The recognized coercion varies depending on the matter being coerced. Coercion to prostrate to other than Allah, if its conditions are met and the heart is at peace with faith, is not considered disbelief nor sin according to the most preponderant opinions of the scholars. Scholars have differed on whether coercion to act is permitted just as coercion to speak is permitted. Some have held that the concession is limited to speech, while others have equated action and speech in the concession if faith is hidden. The latter is the more preponderant view.
