The question

Is the inability to achieve Khushu' (devotional focus) in obligatory prayers considered an excuse, due to exhaustion resulting from intense Khushu' in a non-obligatory act of worship that led to the depletion of Khushu'? And what is the advice for someone suffering from a psychological and physical breakdown after an act of worship in which they experienced profound Khushu'?

The answer

Humility (khushu') is not something limited that is divided among acts of worship; rather, it is a state of the heart characterized by submissiveness and brokenness before Allah. Achieving humility in one act of worship does not prevent its achievement in another; instead, it aids it, because good deeds beget good deeds. If humility is not achieved, the reason is not a previous state of humility, but rather one must search for the true reason and address it. Among the reasons for humility are: contemplating the attributes of Allah, remembering the Hereafter, and reflecting on the Quran. Whoever suffers a mental breakdown after an act of worship, let him seek help from Allah and increase in remembrance (dhikr) and supplication (du'a), for that is from the wiles of Satan, and let him strive in repentance and seeking forgiveness.
