What is the ruling on the monument to the unknown soldier?

Erecting monuments for dignitaries or those who played a significant role in building the state, and for what is called the "Unknown Soldier," is an act of Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic ignorance) and blameworthy extremism. This resembles early idolatry and is a means to major shirk (definition) (polytheism). Therefore, these traditions must be abolished to preserve the doctrine of Tawhid (definition) (monotheism) and to prevent extravagance and imitation of the harmful customs of the disbelievers.
