The answer

It is not permissible to marry a non-scriptural disbeliever (kafirah), based on the Almighty’s saying: "And do not marry polytheistic women until they believe." As for a scriptural woman (kitābīyah), it is permissible to marry her if she is chaste, based on the Almighty’s saying: "And [lawful in marriage are] the chaste women from among those who were given the Scripture before you." Nevertheless, it is advisable to marry a righteous woman who shares his religion and helps him raise their children upon the Islamic creed. The fact that a woman has children does not prevent marriage to her, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, married Umm Salamah, and she had children.
