What is the name of Jesus, peace be upon him, in Jewish texts, and what is the reason for its difference from what is mentioned in the Qur’an?
Source: FtawySummary from Ftawy's records · added here Sep 2, 2026
Jesus (peace be upon him) spoke Hebrew. He was one of the Ulul Azm (prophets of strong will) and was sent to the Children of Israel. Christians call him "Jesus," which in Hebrew is "Yeshua" and means "the Savior." The name "Isa" in the Quran is an Arabization of the Hebrew name "Yeshua," and there is no difference in meaning between the two names. "Al-Masih" (the Messiah) is a title meaning "the Anointed One of God."
