Is it correct for a person to identify with a specific group, such as saying: "I am from Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama’ah," or is it better not to say that to avoid division and discrimination, while being careful to ensure that one's actions and deeds conform to what Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama’ah are upon?
It is permissible and good to demonstrate affiliation with the Ahl al- wal-Jama'ah (People of the Sunnah and the Community). This designation emerged to distinguish between the people of innovation (bid'ah) and the people who follow the Quran and Sunnah. The methodology of the Salaf is always the truth. The terms "Sunnah" and "Jama'ah" are religiously sanctioned, and texts supporting them have been reported.
This designation appeared with the emergence of differences and innovations, to distinguish those who follow the Sunnah and the Jama'ah from those who opposed them among the people of desires (Ahl al-Ahwa'), such as the Khawarij, the Shi'ah, the Murji'ah, and the Qadariyyah. While they are Muslims, they do not fully embrace the truth, so it became necessary to distinguish the Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jama'ah from them. The imams of Islam have unanimously agreed on the validity of this designation.
