The answer

Parents are generally compassionate and keen on their children's well-being. Obedience to them is obligatory in matters that do not involve disobedience (to Allah), provided there is no excessiveness or harm to the child. If the mother prevents her child from accepting an invitation without a legitimate Shar'i reason for prevention, and if non-acceptance of the invitation results in harm, then there is no blame in accepting the invitation while trying to please the mother. As for maintaining kinship ties (silat al-rahim), parents are not permitted to prevent their children from the minimum level of it. If they prevent it without a legitimate Shar'i justification, then there is no obedience to them; for obedience is in what is right (ma'ruf), not in disobeying Allah. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "There is no obedience in disobedience to Allah; rather, obedience is in what is right." The minimum level of kinship ties can be achieved without visitation. It is recommended to supplicate for the parents, advising them, and explaining the seriousness of cutting off kinship ties.
