First: Obligatory maintenance ( wajibah), which is determined by the need of each child. Thus, one child may receive more than another to meet their needs.

Some hold that there should be equality between male and female, while others are of the opinion that the male should receive a share equal to that of two females. This latter view is held by Muhammad ibn al-, Ahmad, Ishaq, and some Shafi'is and Malikis.
