The is recommended according to the majority of scholars, and it is best to perform it on the seventh day. It is not a condition to eat from it on the same day; rather, it is permissible to slaughter it before the seventh day in order to eat from it on that day or for another purpose, and it is permissible to delay it until the fourteenth day. Also, it is permissible for the family of the newborn to eat all of the aqiqah, though it is better to combine eating with giving charity.
