Is it obligatory for the children of a deceased man to slaughter an aqiqah for him if his father did not slaughter it for him and he himself did not slaughter it during his lifetime?

Sons are not required to sacrifice an 'aqiqah (definition) for their deceased father, as it is the guardian of the newborn who is recommended and encouraged to do so. Scholars have differed on whether the 'aqiqah remains the responsibility of the one for whom it was originally intended, or if an adult may perform an 'aqiqah for himself.
