What should a wife do if her husband accuses her of theft, mistreats her, monitors her, holds her accountable for everything, and withholds her personal allowance? Should she persist in her denial, or should she confess to him and seek a divorce after she has come to despise life with him?

It is not permissible for a husband to verbally abuse or insult his wife. This is Haram (definition) (forbidden) by consensus. The wife is permitted to seek a divorce for this reason. The husband's expenditure on his wife and children is determined by custom and the husband's financial status. If he falls short in this regard, he is oppressive. The wife is permitted to take from his money, without his knowledge, what is sufficient for her and her children, in a reasonable manner. If he does not desist from his oppression, she has the right to seek a divorce due to harm.
