The question

Is it correct to cite as evidence for the permissibility of uncovering the thigh the hadith about the Prophet (peace be upon him) uncovering his thigh in front of Abu Bakr and Umar, or the hadith, "And my knee was touching the thigh of the Prophet (peace be upon him), then he uncovered his thigh from the izar," or what Al-Haythami narrated from Abu Sa'id: "So he dangled his legs into the well and uncovered his thighs"?

The answer

Scholars have differed on whether a man's thigh is considered 'awrah (private parts that must be covered during prayer and in front of others) into two opinions: the majority hold that it is 'awrah, while others maintain that it is not 'awrah, citing the of Anas that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, uncovered his thigh.

As for those who assert that the thigh is not 'awrah, they make two exceptions: 1. Prayer: It is not permissible to uncover the thigh during prayer, as this contradicts the command to "take your adornment." 2. Fear of temptation (fitna): The thigh must be covered if there is a fear that its exposure could lead to temptation, such as the thighs of young men.

In conclusion, the issue is a matter of scholarly disagreement, and prudence for one's religion, character, and chivalry dictates that a Muslim should cover his thigh.
