Is a husband considered bigoted and backward for not allowing his wife to go out in certain clothes and with an uncovered face with her friends, knowing that her father sees this as normal, and how can the wife be convinced to change her habits if they are wrong?
The is an obligation upon the Muslim woman. For a wife to go out in clothing that does not cover her legs is a dereliction of duty, and it is forbidden for her to go out without her husband's permission. Her obedience to him takes precedence over her obedience to her father. If she insists on going out without observing the regulations of Islamic law, then she is disobedient (nashiz), and Islamic law has outlined steps for dealing with disobedience. Divorce before having children is easier and has fewer repercussions than after. There is a difference of opinion among jurists regarding the ruling on covering the face. If sunscreen enhances the skin, it is considered adornment, and it is not permissible to go out with it unless the face is covered. One must be careful not to trifle with Islamic legal terminology, as whoever adheres to their religion and observes the regulations of Islamic law is not considered extremist.
