Is the black abaya or the one with dark colors better than others, and is the niqab obligatory?

The color black, or any other color, holds no specific religious merit. What is required for a woman's attire is that it fulfills the conditions of lawful Islamic dress. Therefore, a black or dark abaya is not superior to others, as Islamic law has not stipulated a specific color for a woman's hijab (definition). It is permissible for her to go out in colored clothing, provided that the colors or patterns are not provocative or eye-catching. Scholars have differed regarding the obligation or recommendation of the niqab.
