What is the ruling on gymnastics for males?

Gymnastics is permissible in principle because it is a custom aimed at strengthening the body, and the general rule for customs is permissibility unless there is evidence of their prohibition, as clarified by Sheikh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah.

However, the practice of gymnastics is often associated with matters forbidden by Sharia (definition): 1. Exposure of 'Awrah (private parts): Gymnastics is often practiced in tight, thin, and short clothing that does not cover the 'awrah (such as the thigh), and this is forbidden due to what was reported from the Prophet, peace be upon him, regarding the preservation of the 'awrah, and because it involves seeing the 'awrah of others. Allah commanded lowering the gaze and forbade a man from looking at the 'awrah of another man and a woman from looking at the 'awrah of another woman. The origin of the word "gymnastics" may trace back to "the naked art" referring to the ancient Greeks' practice of it nude. 2. Music and Dance: Some types of gymnastics, such as rhythmic gymnastics, may be accompanied by forbidden music and dance. 3. Throwing oneself into perdition: It may involve dangerous movements that could lead to harm or destruction, and the Sharia has forbidden throwing oneself into perdition.
