If a person is afflicted in their mind with magic or insanity, then the pen is lifted from them, because accountability is based on intellect, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The pen has been lifted from three: from the sleeper until he awakens, from the insane person until he regains his sanity, and from the child until he reaches maturity." It is obligatory to seek treatment for him, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Seek treatment, for Allah has not sent down a disease except that He has sent down a cure for it." However, if he is of sound mind and abandons prayer, he commits a grave sin, and scholars have leaned towards the view that the one who abandons prayer is an apostate.
