Is it permissible to make the intention of seeking forgiveness (Istighfar) with the aim of achieving a specific matter, such that the intention of seeking forgiveness spans throughout the entire month?
Source: FtawySummary from Ftawy's records · added here Sep 2, 2026
Seeking forgiveness (Istighfar) brings Allah's mercy, well-being, wards off punishment, and increases strength and sustenance, as mentioned in the Holy Quran. These benefits are attained simply by seeking forgiveness, without the need for a prior intention to gain a benefit or repel harm. What is most important is the presence of the heart and certainty of response when seeking forgiveness and supplicating, and to seek out the formulas narrated from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. It is recommended to combine seeking forgiveness with supplication, and to precede a request with seeking forgiveness.
