The question

Does the Hadith, "Whoever recites a letter from the Book of Allah will have a reward, and that reward will be multiplied by ten. I do not say that 'Alif-Lam-Mim' is one letter, but rather 'Alif' is a letter, 'Lam' is a letter, and 'Mim' is a letter," apply to someone who reads the Qur’an in another language (such as English) for the purpose of understanding?

The answer

The reward mentioned in the for reciting the Quran is attained by whoever recites it in its Arabic letters, and it is not attained by whoever reads a translation of its meanings. Nevertheless, a Muslim is rewarded for reading a translation of the Quran's meanings for reflection and benefit, because a translation is considered an interpretation.
