How can Aisha's narration, "Indeed, only he whose sins have been forgiven finds rest," be reconciled with the narration, "one who is at rest and one from whom others are at rest," concerning the description of death as rest, and is it permissible to say, "So-and-so died and found rest"?

There is no contradiction between the two hadiths, because the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, disapproved of Bilal's definitive statement that the woman had found rest, while he did not know whether she had been forgiven or not. So, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was angered by Bilal's saying: "So-and-so died and found rest," because not everyone who dies finds rest. Death might bring misery to its owner if he was negligent in fulfilling what Allah obligated upon him, just as only Allah knows the ultimate destiny of a person. In essence, it is not permissible to definitively state for a specific individual that he died and found rest, except for those mentioned by divine revelation. However, the general statement that the deceased is either at rest or that others are relieved of him, is true.
