What is the ruling on attending the funeral of a family friend?

A Muslim's witnessing of a Muslim's funeral procession, praying over them, and burying them, contains much goodness and great virtue. Whoever attends a funeral until the prayer is performed over it receives one qirat, and whoever attends it until it is buried receives two qirats. A qirat is like two mighty mountains. Following the funeral of a Muslim is a right upon the living Muslim, and it may be an individual obligation (fard ayn), a communal obligation (fard kifayah), or recommended. It is more emphasized for relatives, close kin, neighbors, and friends.
