What is the ruling on following the funeral procession of an unknown person?

Following the funeral procession of a Muslim is a right owed to the deceased by the living, whether the living person knew the deceased or not. The Shari'ah (Islamic law) has encouraged it and assigned a great reward for it. Al-Bukhari and Muslim narrated from Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever attends a funeral until the prayer is offered on it, will have a qirat, and whoever attends it until it is buried, will have two qirats." It was asked, "What is a qirat?" He said, "Like two great mountains." Following funeral processions is a Sunnah (definition) (Prophetic tradition) by consensus, whether one knows the deceased or not, and whether they are a relative or a stranger.
