What is the ruling on taking payment for reciting and intoning the Qur’an at occasions such as condolences?
Reciting the Quran at a mourning gathering is an innovation (bid‘ah), and it is impermissible to take payment for it. Scholars have differed on the permissibility of taking payment for reciting and teaching the Quran. The Hanafis and Hanbalis prohibited it, citing hadiths that forbid seeking worldly gain through the Quran. The Malikis, Shafi'is, and Zahiris permitted it, and this is the among later Hanafis, citing hadiths that permit taking payment for the Quran, such as the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "The most deserving thing for which you take payment is the Book of Allah." As for taking sustenance from the public treasury (bayt al-mal), grants, and gifts, there is no disagreement regarding their permissibility.
