To increase faith and strive against the self to do good, the following are recommended: striving against the self and compelling it to obedience, remembering the closeness of death and standing before Allah, and recalling Paradise and Hellfire, accompanying the righteous and avoiding the wicked, diligently reciting the Qur'an with contemplation, reading the biographies of the righteous and emulating them, and persisting in supplication and humble entreaty to Allah Almighty.
